Water Filtration vs. Water Softening – A Home Water Treatment Guide
You may be at work all day or travelling all month, but as they say, there is no place like home. A home is your save haven. A place you are happy to return to. A place where you feel relaxed, comfortable, at ease and secure. And the last thing you would want to worry about is something you and your family use at home all the time – water!
Whether it is to drink, cook, bathe, wash utensils, clean appliances or wash clothes, water is something that you are constantly using for all your regular day to day activities. Hence, having clean and soft water at home is an absolute necessity.

Home Water Filtration 101
Water filtration is one form of water purification. It is the physical, biological or chemical process of removing impurities such as suspended particles, algae, parasites, bacteria, fungi as well as other biological and chemical contaminants from water, making it safe for consumption and use.
What Are The Benefits of Water Filtration?

The Different Types Of Filtration And Filters
There are various water filter systems, categorized by their intended purpose. Every home owner should decide on the filtration system for their property based on factors such as the current quality of the water supplied to them, the water source, the extent to which they want it purified, and the cost of installing and maintaining a filter system. The most popular types of home water filters are:
- Whole House Water Filtration Systems
A smart, but expensive choice is to install a whole house water filtration system in your home. It filters all the water. Basic treatment removes chlorine and sediments. Specialized whole house filters can filter out heavy metals and other contaminants. Some whole house water filters also take on the role of water softeners and help reduce water hardness, most importantly resulting in an increased lifespan of plumbing systems and home appliances such as your dishwasher. However, in places where the water is very hard, it’s advisable to install a traditional water softener which is better suited for regulating hardness minerals (more on that in a bit).
- Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Systems
Reverse Osmosis is a process by which a large majority of contaminants are removed from water by applying pressure, pushing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. A semi-permeable membrane allows some substances to pass, but not others. Reverse osmosis is one of the finest technologies used to purify water. It is capable of removing 99% of dissolved salts (ions), colloids, particles, organics, and bacteria from water. The output water is demineralized but also very pure without any leftover residues or odors.
- Under Sink Filters
There are two types of under sink filters, those that use reverse osmosis combined with pre- and post-filtration and those that do without reverse osmosis. Most regular under sink water filters successfully remove a plethora of contaminants, resulting in clean and good tasting water. Depending on the extent to which the water needs to be purified, there is a choice of different filter media. Installing and maintaining under sink water filters is simple and the cost is affordable, too. The benefit of having an under sink filter that uses its own dedicated faucet is that you can switch it on and off. This results in filter cartridges lasting much longer. The only thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the reduced water flow rate.
- Countertop Water Filter Systems
If you want a filter that’s convenient, easy to install, portable and usable without making any changes to your plumbing system, then a countertop water filter with one or more filtration stages is your answer. Most connect to the kitchen faucet without the need for tools. There is a possibility though that if the faucet is not standardized that it might not be compatible. In such case, connecting through an adapter might work. Reverse osmosis or regular countertop doesn’t make a difference. But beware; even the best countertop reverse osmosis system purifies water very slowly.
- Gravity Filters
Gravity water filters clean contaminated or polluted water using gravity. The weight of the water allows it to flow through the filtration elements. The filtered water is collected in a storage tank. This is why a larger gravity filter is better. It means higher pressure and therefore faster filtration. A bigger filter system is also more convenient since it can store more water for less frequent refilling.
- Faucet Mounted Water Filters
Quick and easy to install with no plumbing involved and convenient to use: Faucet mounted water filters. The main difference to countertop water filters is that faucet filters are more affordable. But oftentimes they also only improve the taste and smell of water without removing many of the more persistent contaminants.
- Filter Water Pitchers
Filter water pitchers are highly popular and the most widely used filters. Why? They are extremely affordable, don’t require installation, and can be stored in the refrigerator. Though convenient to use, we would advise the use of this type of filter only when the quality of water already is quite high. Regular filter water pitchers cannot remove as many contaminants as a under-the-sink or countertop system. Filter water pitchers have different filtration and water storage capacities. These vary between 5-12 cups of storage water and around 40 gallons of filtered water capacity per filter cartridge.
- Refrigerator Filters
Most refrigerator filters use activated carbon to reduce contaminants. A factor to consider here is price versus quality. An OEM filter is expensive, while aftermarket refrigerator water filters are much more affordable. Choosing a cheaper option might save money but the quality of purified water is not the best. Aftermarket water filters tend to have lower filtering capacities, too. It’s also important to check the compatibility of the filter with the refrigerator to ensure there is no leaking.
- Shower Filters
Shower filters are affordable and easy to install. They play a huge role in improving your showering experience by getting rid of certain contaminants. The filtered water won’t have an odor to it, and your skin and hair will feel smoother. It is believed that air carrying chlorine from the shower water can irritate our lungs and eyes. So, a shower filter will reduce one’s contact to chemicals in water, benefitting your health. There is a wide range of filter media that can be used.
Home Water Softening 101
Water softeners remove a host of minerals from hard water, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and other metals and salts, leaving us with soft water. What characterizes hard water? Hard water contains a high amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) and a higher concentration of multivalent cations – Ca2+ and Mg2+.
A water softener has three main components, a resin tank, a brine tank, and a head valve to control the flow and direction of the water. The resin tank is filled with tiny resin beads – lots of them. The brine tank is used to store and dissolve the softening salt (sodium chloride). When hard water flows through the resin tank, the resin beads release salt ions, exchanging them for hard water ions. This process is called ion exchange and results in softened water.
Eventually, the resin beads will be covered with calcium, magnesium and possibly other ions removed from the hard water, so they need to recharge. In the regeneration process, brine is drawn from the brine tank into the resin tank. The highly saturated salt solution washes all hardness ions from the resin beads and sends them down the drain. This is another ion exchange process, but this time it’s the other way round: The sodium replaces the hardness minerals.
Once recharged, the water softener can continue providing softened water throughout the home.
What Are The Benefits of Water Softening?

- There is less staining on fixtures, shower curtains, toilets, glassware, etc., saving you time when cleaning
- Soaps and detergents lather better for up to 50% less cleaning products required
- Clothes retain their softness and vibrant colors
A lot of time and energy goes into cleaning and/or replacing appliances affected by hard water, leading to unnecessary wastage of time and money, and this can be avoided by having a water softener installed at home.
Water Softeners and Water Conditioners
There are traditional salt water softeners and salt-free water conditioners. The difference between a water softener and a water conditioner is that a water softener will remove hard water minerals from water (as explained above), while a water conditioner will retain the minerals, but change their structure so that they can’t bind to surfaces.
Simply put, a water softener eliminates scale, whereas a water conditioner only reduces it. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon. When a water softener is used, the grains per gallon go effectively down. While, when a water conditioner is used, they remain unchanged.
If you’re environmentally conscious you might decide against a traditional water softener to not release excess salt into your water supply. However, salt water softeners are much more effective than water conditioners. All in all, it’s an individual choice of priorities and requirements.
Water Filtration vs. Water Softening
To summarize, water filtration systems remove various harmful contaminants from water, while water softeners only remove minerals such as calcium and magnesium to reduce hardness. The reason to soften water is to eliminate scaling, making it better for your skin and hair, your plumbing, and also for any appliances using water. The reason to filter water is to remove unhealthy pollutants.
A water softener will not purify water of any contaminant, a health risk for everyone who consumes that unfiltered water. Hence the ideal situation would be to have a water softening system and a water filtration system installed in your home.
Whichever water treatment option one decides to go with should largely depend on the purity of the source water supply, the extent to which the water needs to be purified, and the money that one is willing to spend on the very same.
