Reverse osmosis filtration systems utilize the natural movement of molecules in a liquid or gas called osmosis to filter water and remove the many impurities and dissolved substances that it contains. By applying pressure higher than the osmotic pressure occurring between two liquids of different solute concentrations on either side of a semi-permeable membrane, the movement of water molecules from the lower to the higher concentrated solution is reversed. Water diffuses through the semi-permeable membrane and thereby almost all solutes are left behind.
